Maintaining Your Ductwork

Your air ducts are an often overlooked portion of your HVAC system. While their main function is to direct airflow, they also play a direct role in your air quality and energy usage as well.

Don’t let your home suffer due to a lack of maintenance on your ductwork. Here are some tips to maintain your ducts for optimal performance.

Seal Leaks

Air leaks are the top way that air ducts reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system. As air moves through, any air lost is money wasted, since your AC or heater will need to make up the difference by producing more.

If you notice any breaks, holes, or cracks in your ducts, have them sealed ASAP to prevent unnecessary energy losses.

Improve Air Filtration

Your air ducts collect dust and debris that are contained in the air that moves through. One way to reduce wear on your ductwork is to reduce the particles passing through the air. Make sure you change your HVAC’s air filter often and upgrade to filters with better capacity.

Don’t Close Air Vents

Closing off air ducts doesn’t actually reduce your AC or heater power. It will still produce climate-controlled air and blow it throughout your ducts. Not only can closing off vents cause your system to work harder, but it can damage your ducts by increasing pressure within them. This can lead to cracks and breaks in your ducts.

Regular Cleanings

Cleaning out your ducts will help improve your indoor air quality and the efficiency of your HVAC system. Periodically, or if you notice excess dust throughout your home, remove the grate to your vent and remove any visible dust or debris. And if it’s been a while, schedule a professional duct cleaning to return your ducts to top shape.
